5 Essentials To Do Before You Begin Your Reno

Admin | August 19, 2022

Renovating a property isn't easy! With so many things to consider, it's easy to get overwhelmed.
Knowing what you need before your reno begins can help you keep the process and work under control.

We've prepared this list of 5 essentials to complete before the work starts:-

1. Know What You Want To Change

Before any work begins, it's important you know what you want changed to avoid doing plus spending more than you'd planned or budgeted.

Some things to consider:

- Is the renovation cosmetic or structural?

- What do I need to be replaced, repaired or restored?

- Do I need to think about where I will sleep, wash or cook while the work takes place?

2. Obtain Approval If Needed

Some renovations do need development or building approval, so it's crucial you check with your council before starting any work.

At Boland Contracting, we can help you make sense of the approvals process if you're looking for demolition or outdoor maintenance.

As we only operate once you have a permit, you'll be sure the process is conducted according to regulation.

3. Have A Budget In Mind

Having a budget and sticking to it is a great preparation before any work begins. Sit down and add up the costs for anything you think you'll need - from trades and materials to inspections and clean-up.

And as things can happen unexpectedly, and often do, we recommend you include a buffer of at least 10% to anticipate those curveball costs.

Our team is ready to work with your budget and can provide a free quote to give you the best idea of expenses.

4. Have A Plan

Your budget will help you know what you can and can't afford. You'll now be able to research trades, determine a timeline and choose your dream fixtures and features.

At Boland Contracting, we're here to help you plan the clearing of land to build, the addition of a retaining wall, and more besides.

5. Inform The Neighbours

For a smaller renovation job, you might not feel you need to inform your neighbours if noise levels are likely to be low. The heavy-duty work we do at Boland Contracting often creates a lot of noise and mess!

We, therefore, recommend you update your neighbours about your plans and the anticipated time frame to ensure there's understanding and agreement on both sides of the fence.
